Vera Playa is located on the Costa Almeria in Andalusia - at approximately the same latitude as the most northerly parts of Africa. It is hailed as the world’s best naturist beach resort.
History Vera Playa is named after the small town of Vera, which lies around 8kms inland from the coast. The nearest town, however, is Garrucha, a busy fishing port about 5 kms to the south of Vera Playa. Garrucha is an attractive and growing town with a wide range of restaurants, shops and other facilities.
Vera Playa is a relatively new resort, which only started to be developed in the 1980s, before which it was pretty much untouched. Legend has it that this is where Hannibal’s elephants landed in the Roman age.
Beaches The beach at Vera Playa runs north-south for 7kms, from just south of Villaricos down through Vera Playa itself and on to Puerto Rey and Garrucha and the council-designated naturist beach is approximately 1km long and the unofficial or traditional naturist beach extends a further kilometre, with the official naturist resort running the length of the beach.
Facilities As with most modern coastal resorts Vera Playa offers good facilities including bars, restaurants, supermarkets and adequate public transport options. For more options you can walk north from Vera Playa to the small harbour village of Villaricos or south to the larger fishing town of Garrucha, which has excellent facilities and dining options.
Vera Playa is also home to a large water park, which provides fun for all the family, with lots of rides, slides, swimming pools, play areas and restaurants.
Climate Vera Playa enjoys a perfect all-year round Mediterranean climate, as does the whole of the Costa Almeria. In the sub-tropical environment temperatures rarely fall below 18ºC. During the summer months the temperature rises above 30ºC and July and August can get much hotter, dropping again around mid-September to a milder, but still warm and enjoyable 23ºC-27ºC degrees. The winters are mild and mostly dry, although the winter evenings can get chilly.
Getting there The resort is well-situated just 13 kms from the Autovia del Mediterraneo (Mediterranean motorway) and is easily accessible from the local airports which serve the area.
Most Spanish visitors arrive to Vera Playa by car - the journey from Madrid is less than 5 hours. Almeria is the nearest large town, approximately 90 kms or just over an hour’s drive away.
