We really enjoyed Sitges and everything it has to offer - great food, great restaurants/bars, good beaches, paddle boarding, cycling, yoga on the beach. There's something for everyone in our multi generational party.
I loved the architecture, attractive properties and no high rise buildings.
Sitges is known as the ‘Jewel on the Mediterranean’ and offers many facets to cater for all tastes. Reputed to offer 300 days of sunshine a year, it is a quaint little coastal town surrounded by the hills of the Garraf National Park.
Sitges old town has typically Spanish narrow streets leading down to a palm tree lined promenade that runs along an open bay with it's many beaches.
The town has been built on an industry of fishing, commerce and wine, and has been much favored by artists, the bohemian crowd and more recently has developed a large gay community. A tourist resort since the 1800s, Sitges offers much more than just a beach resort.
Sitges is located just to the south of Barcelona, and is about a 20 minute drive from Barcelona’s El Prat international airport.
Car Hire It is not necessary to hire a car when staying in Sitges as there are excellent transport links to and from Barcelona airport and into Barcelona city.
Leisure & recreation Sitges itself has a compact centre, easy to walk around, yet large enough to hold lots of interesting sights and attractions; offering an excellent variety of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars to suit all budgets, museums, art galleries, Sitges market, Port d'Aiguadolc and various sporting activities, including water sports, golf, tennis and horse-riding. Sitges is also a lovely place to take a stroll and enjoy the sights and sounds of local life.
Excursions Barcelona is easily accessible both by the train and bus. Explore the local villages and countryside. The medieval town of Montblanc, Roman city of Tarragona and the attractive landscape of the Penedes and Conca de la Barbera, Monestir de Montserrat are all easily accessible trips.
If you are a wine connoisseur then you will enjoy visiting the local vineyards and bodegas ofTorres, Cordoniu and Priorat.
Vilafranca del Penedes, the Penedes capital is worth a visit on market day. The town has an interesting wine museum to visit, then we recomment you enjoy a lunchtime "menu del dia" in the Placa Sant Joan.
Fiestas Sitges loves a reason to hold a party of festival, with some of the best include the September Grape Harvest Festival and the Sardana Dance of the Harvest Festival.
In October, the town holds the International Film Festival of Catalonia and in February, the famous Sitges Carnival Week.
Golf The excellent Club de Golf Terramar offers golf, tennis, swimming pool and restaurant. There are further golf courses available in and around the area.
Cuisine The gastronomy of Catalonia is rich and varied. Principally it is the typical Mediterranean diet of fish and seafood with fresh vegetables, olives and olive oil rice and pasta. A typical and delicious speciality from L’Escala are the local, delicious anchovies.
We recommend that visitors try some traditional Catalan dishes whilst on holiday, especially delicious are Escudella I Carn D'olla, vegetable broth with pork, veal and chicken. Pa Amb Tomàquet, simply rustic bread, can be toasted, rubbed with tomato pulp and dressed with oil and salt; these delcious breakfast can also be served with ham, sausage or tortilla.
Coca is a very thin dough baked with onions, peppers and other vegetables served with and meats, or fish (especially sardines).
Climate The Sitges climate is temperate, with mild temperatures and moderate rainfall throughout the year. In the highlands the winters are cold with lots of snow, making them ideal ski-resorts.
On the coast hot summer temperatures are tempered by cooling sea breezes. Winters are exceptionally mild with some rain.
