Puerto Rico is one of Gran Canaria’s most popular family resorts and not surprisingly as it is well known for being one of the sunniest spots on the island.
Situated at the mouth of a large valley, this once small fishing port, has today become a busy holiday resort, with its now smart marina and hotels and apartments, built on terraces rising up along the steep slopes along the coastline.
Around town Although the town can get overcrowded during peak season, Puerto Rico can be very nice and quiet in low season. The resort itself has a nice friendly feel and is ideal for families with children, as there are lots of activities, which include the whole family.
The attractive marina has a respected sailing centre, with some of its members achieving Olympic medal status. Deep-sea fishing is also renowned here, proof of which can be fond in the fifty world records claimed by fishermen setting out from this port.
There are plenty of amenities around town such as bars, restaurants, shops and a popular public swimming pool. There is a good bus system that gets you to other destinations on the island, and is cheap and reliable.
Beach The beach at Puerto Rico is small but delightful; with sand which has been brought over from the Sahara. The popular beach does tend to get crowded, you will even find sun beds lined up along the jetty.
Set back a little from the beach in a lush tropical garden with exotic plants and flowers, is the public swimming pool.
There are an excellent range of water sports activities offered from the beach, including jet-skiing, sailing, diving, big game fishing and windsurfing. Plus you can take a day trip on a pleasure exploring the rest of the coast, go dolphin watching or enjoy a trip in a glass bottom boat.
Places to visit In the local area you will find golf courses, a water park and a shopping centre nearby, something for mum, dad and the children!
Climate Gran Canarias’s climate like the rest of the Canary Islands is mild, enjoying pleasant temperatures all year round. Average temperatures during the summer months average 26-28C; during the winter months the temperature rarely drops below 22 degrees, making it a perfect all year round destination.
A town with a lot of turists - mostly Scandinavian. And sellers in the streets, trying to sell appartments / shares in new building projects. Allthough we tried to be friendly, they were insulted, when we said no thanks.
