Empuriabrava just 4 km from the town of Castello de Empuries is a very popular tourist resort. A purpose built tourist resort with many fine houses and apartments, the whole residential neighbourhood is built around many kilometres of canal-like waterways close to some of the finest golden sandy beaches on the Iberian peninsula.
Empuriabrava is one of the most important tourist destinations of northern Catalonia, with one of the largest marinas in the world. The aerodrome at Girona is approximately 40 minutes drive.
Leisure & recreation There are many attractions in and around Empuriabrava including sky diving, trip to a water park, sea diving in one of the many fish reserves, glass bottom boat trips, boat charter, fishing trips, go karts, visits to a butterfly park or bird sanctuary and of course golf . There is protected land on either side of the resort, which has traffic free paths for walking, jogging and cycling.
Empuriabrava has Europe's largest waterways system; many of the houses have moorings in their back garden which lead out to the Mediterranean via a series of canals. You can hire a small boat in the marina and explore the canals for an hour or two.
Beaches There are two long sandy beaches that never get too crowded and have water sports, beach bars, showers and other facilities.
Market Saturday morning is market day in Empuriabrava, on Sunday you can visit the markets of L'Escala & Roses.
Cuisine The gastronomy of Catalonia is rich and varied. Principally it is the typical Mediterranean diet of fish and seafood with fresh vegetables, olives and olive oil rice and pasta. A typical and delicious speciality from this region are the local anchovies, from L’Escala.
We recommend that visitors try some traditional Catalan dishes whilst on holiday, especially delicious are Escudella I Carn D'olla, vegetable broth with pork, veal and chicken. Pa Amb Tomàquet, simply rustic bread, can be toasted, rubbed with tomato pulp and dressed with oil and salt; these delicious breakfast can also be served with ham, sausage or tortilla.
Coca is a very thin dough baked with onions, peppers and other vegetables served with and meats, or fish (especially sardines).
Castelló d'Empúries Nearby Castelló d'Empúries retains its medieval charm and shows the important historical influence in the region. Empúries county encompassed the entire valley including seven monasteries and enclaves as important as St.Martí d'Empuries.
Climate The area is enjoyably sunny and warm through spring, summer and autumn; the winters are mild with some rain.
Empuriabrava is mainly filled with tourists. Some restaurants and bars are out pricing themselves. €3.50 for a small beer or a cool drink doesn't seem realistic to me. If you find the right places the same beer or cool drink will cost € 1,- or €1.50
