Arenas is a picturesque whitewashed village which straddles a hillside within beautiful mountain scenery, set in the beautiful Axarquia region. The village was first established by the Moors who took advantage of its location in prized agricultural surroundings.
The Moorish influence is apparent in the narrow streets and typical Moorish squares. There is an ancient olive mill and mural made by the famous ceramics artist Virgilio González. In the village there is an impressive church-mosque and the town hall.
The village is located inland from the Mediterranean coastline 10 kilometres from Velez-Málaga, 14 kilometres from the coast, and 67 kilometres from the centre of the city of Málaga. The resort of Torre del Mar is only 15 kilometres away which takes about 30 minutes by car.
Arenas is a fantastic option for getting away from the hustle and bustle of the ordinary Costa del Sol resort holiday, yet it is not too far from the action to feel isolated..
Places to visit Take the opportunity to ascend the neighboring mountain on mule back for glorious panoramic views. A trip to the beach resort of Torre del Mar is great day out for those who wish to enjoy some sun, sand and sea. There is more information in the Torre del Mar section on www.spain-holiday.com
Golf Arenas nearest golf course is Baviera Golf, around 30 minutes drive away. It is a very attractive, newly completed course to challenge all levels of skill.
Cuisine Arenas' cuisine is typical of the Axarquia region; specialties include Ajoblanco con Uvas (Garlic Soup with Grapes), Chota a la Cazadora (Kid in Almond Sauce), Cordero Asado al Horno (Roast Marinated Lamb) and sweet Churros, fried dough sticks, a bit like donuts, dipped in hot chocolate, delicious!
Climate Arenas enjoys a sub-tropical Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and warm winters. Divided from the sea by the mountains means the heat can soar in summer, but it remains comfortable for the most part. Temperatures are an average of 32 ºC in summer.
