Studio Calendula stands, Venice-like, right over the waters of the Thames. On the lower ground floor, with glass doors onto the river and onto the riverside conservatory, the studio is sunny and light. Ripples of water dance on the ceiling in the wake of boats gliding downstream. It is the most spacious of the Folly Bridge apartments. It has its own front door and a small private conservatory for outside dining or reclining, fishing or catching crayfish. On winter days you can lounge inside on the love-seat in the sun, reading your book, gazing downstream. Right up in the battlements, you might imagine yourself in that mythical Oxford ‘ivory tower’. You can see to the clouds that hover over the Chilterns Hills far away to the south. It doesn t have the big views of the other apartments but, being on the lower ground floor, the ducks and swans glide past at eye-level. If you’re lucky you might see a kingfisher dart past. The filigreed prow of a Venetian gondola is sometimes framed in the middle of the window, reminding guests of that other place where crenellated castles stand romantically close to the water.
